Wagtail Cabin

A luxury base for your Northumbrian adventure

Welcome to Wagtail

Surrounded by big skies and incredible views, Wagtail combines elegance and sustainability. Disconnect from daily life in peaceful Northumberland countryside.

Built with rustic indulgence in mind, our bespoke shepherds hut welcomes you to a warm, spacious haven. The first hut opens to a kitchen, dining table, raised double bed with storage space beneath and a Smart TV. This comfortable, warm space benefits from wonderful upland views and contains a fridge, a gas oven, two hobs and a sink — whose oak cover doubles as a chopping board or prep space — in the kitchen.

A glass corridor leads to a bespoke add on hut. The free-standing copper bath is a key feature, allowing you to truly relax in luxury. Run a deep bubble bath using the indulgent White Company products, pour a glass of wine – there’s a handy timber shelf on which glasses might be placed – and you’re all set to commence gazing at the incredible spread of stars on show above. If you’re lucky and the sky is clear you might also witness the soft haze of the Milky Way or spot the odd shooting star.

Romantic & Luxurious

Endless luxuries and dark open skies

Stargazing is rarely this indulgent. Occupying one of its two cleverly-conjoined shepherds’ huts, the bathroom at Wagtail impressively contains a freestanding copper tub. Just above, visible through a glass ceiling, is a certified Dark Sky area, part of the Northumberland National Park and completely free from light pollution.

The lounge offers two cosy armchairs framing a large window overlooking more rolling fields, with a telescope provided for stargazing. Filled with board games, a chest here doubles as a coffee table. Panoramic views are shared from the double bed. Gaze at the dark skies by night and incredible wildlife by day.

Outside, beyond fragrant lavender plants, are bench seats and another table. Boasting a chiminea barbecue too, the enclosed garden area is situated at the huts’ far side and thus visible only to cows or sheep in neighbouring paddocks. You also have access to a fairy-lit barn with a firepit and a bar area — ideal upon less-clement days.

A glorious part of Northumberland

Set in a place of beauty, history and tranquility

The tub typifies Wagtail, both in the sense of its gently upscale nature and the rustic peace on offer to couples here. Part of the working Low Tipalt Farm, Wagtail neighbours our house, yet is carefully angled so as not to be overlooked. We love to welcome guests and are always on hand if you need recommendations in the local area.

Situated in such a gloriously remote part of Northumberland, we have focused on the environment throughout the whole build and have taken great care ensure the hut’s eco credentials. To keep you warm and toasty in the cooler months, Wagtail has gas central heating and is insulated with 100ml of sheep’s wool, while the anti-allergenic pillows are filled with loose Sheep’s wool rather than synthetic foam.

The 4G reception is strong enough for Netflix-streaming on the Samsung Smart TV in the hut, ideal for cosy nights in. Wagtail is intended as somewhere to recharge; a retreat from daily, stressful life, soundtracked by the occasional baa or moo. A pathway is fenced, providing guests with exclusive, access to Tipalt Burn, without having to worry about disturbing any local livestock. Better still, a hamper and locally-recycled rug are provided so you can have riverside picnics. Look out for passing wildlife: deer, hares, curlews, oystercatchers or, yes, wagtails.

What Our Guests Say

"What an amazing place"
We have loved our short time here. Everything has been perfect. The hut is well equipped, great weather, had a 6 mile walk on the wall, lots of mud but we knew we had a a bath to come back too. Plenty of lambs around, doing giddy lamb things which is always a pleasure. Thank you for all the goodies, we will be back for another short break soon! Liz & Bernie, May 2023

"Wonderful hosts, so helpful and inviting"
What an absolutely wonderful and refreshing break we’ve had. Wagtail was the perfect escape from the city with such beautiful views morning and night. Waking up to the blue sky and green hills was such a delight. The hut was incredibly homely. Slept soundly each night and every little touch added even more to the modern country vibe. Really makes you want to convert a van and hit the road! “I love it here! The setting, the hut, and the animals all combine to make this the best relaxing break – just what I needed. Tanya and Ed are wonderful hosts – nothing is too much trouble for them. They have thought of so many luxurious touches to make Wagtail comfortable and welcoming. Even their dog Molly is a real star. On my last night the clouds cleared – heavens lit with more stars than I have ever seen – if you get a chance, step outside for a 360° view, it’s magical! Wild swimming is also a bonus if you’re brave enough! I would love to return to experience winter in this beautiful, remote place. Mrs Lorimer
